In his interview with al Arabiya TV 'Mubashar Stream' Dr Walid Phares said "Secretary Kerry's statement about eventually engaging Assad for the solution is a logical part of the forthcoming deal with the Iranian regime"

Phares, author of "The Lost Spring: US Policy in the Middle East and Catastrophes to Avoid," said "stating that Assad will be part of the solution and engaging him by Washington will actually happen, confirms one thing, that the Obama Administration is moving forward very seriously with the Iran deal." Phares argued that "while President Obama has in the past asked Assad to step down, his Administration is now moving in the direction of renewing talks with the dictator's regime. Why? Because the Iranian regime won't let go of Assad and wants him to be part of the bigger deal. Kerry is sending a message to Iran's Ayatollahs that Assad will be included in the process, and no regime change in Damascus."

Phares projected that such statements may be part of last minute messaging to Tehran to encourage them to finish their preparations for the deal. "Kerry is telling the Iranian regime that Washington guarantees the survival of the Assad regime but that time is running, and Congress is pressuring, it's like telling the Iranians, OK Assad is in, now deliver your side of the bargaining. Let us announce to the world that we have an agreement."

Asked about potential reactions by Congress to this statement, Phares said "from what we know so far, Congressional reactions will come and will blast the deal with Iran and the rehabilitation of Assad. Washington is divided and will continue to be divided for one year and nine months."
