In an interview with al Arabiya TV Professor Walid Phares said "the US Marines units sent by the Obama Administration to Iraq raises the issue of pro Iranian Shia sectarian militias hostile to Sunnis."

Phares argued that the "Hashd Shaabi" Shia militias, controlled by Iran, makes it difficult for moderate Sunnis to rise against ISIS. "US Marines may engage with local forces to push back against ISIS without alienating the moderates Sunnis"
