LLS COURSE WINTER 1994

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF MIDDLE EAST CONFLICTS

Dr. Walid A. Phares holds a Ph.D. in International Relations, a Master's in International Law and degrees in political science and sociology. He is an expert on the Middle East and on ethnic and nationalist conflicts worldwide.

To understand current crisis, one must first discover the complexity of past struggles and claims. The course will cover the ancient times, the emergence of Islam, the Arab conquest, the Ottoman Empire, the new nationalism: Arabs, Zionism, Christian minori­ties, the European mandates in the Levant, strategic perspectives for the future, etc.

The instructor will analyze the factors which caused the eruption of current conflicts from a historical perspective. He will explain poorly known facts in the development of this turbulent region.

2. Pre-Islamic Arabia/ the Emergence of Islam: Conquest and Resistance

3. Arab-Moslem Dynasties/The Ottoman Empire

4. The Fall of the Ottoman Empire/Europe, Nationalism and Minorities

5. The Emergence of Arab Nationalism/The Development of Zionism

6. Christian Nations of the Middle East/World War One and the Three Promises

7. The British and French Mandates in the Levant/The Arab-Jewish Dispute

8. The Arab-Israeli Wars/Major Conflicts in the Middle East
