In an interview on MTV (Mur TV) in Beirut, Dr Walid Phares said "the Russian military operation in Syria aim at protecting the Assad regime from Turkey's borders to Lebanon's borders and around Damascus. He added that Hezbollah will be empowered in Lebanon by a Russian backing of Assad."

Phares, the Co-Secretary of the Transatlantic Parliamentary Group on Counter Terrorism projected that the immediate first goal was to stop the collapse of the regime, and assist Assad forces and Hezbollah to move east bound to regain terrain. "Possibly even an airborne operation in Palmyra." Phares argued that the Obama Administration may leave the Russians build that space north south in Syria in order to prepare for a Geneva III conference. "But matters on the ground may be unpredictable."

Phares said Turkey is nervous about the operation and Arab states as well, including Saudi Arabia. "If Washington fails to stop the campaign at one particular point in Sunni areas, Arab countries may act." So far he argued the "airstrikes are indeed hitting ISIS, al Nusra and other armed groups, Jihadists and non Jihadists."

On Lebanon, Phares said "there may not be a need to Russian forces in Lebanon to fight ISIS and al Nusra, for Hezbollah has enough troops to handle the situation on the borders. But if parts of Lebanon, particularly in the north, would erupt, Hezbollah may call on the Russians to send special forces to help them"
