Dr Walid Phares to Fox Business Channel: "We need to fight the Jihadists in Afghanistan decisively, but we need to partner with its civil society too, so that we can win it" Phares focused on five points, "three are clear, one is less clear, and one is missing."

Phares argued first that President Trump moved away from the Obama policy by announcing that a decisive victory over the Taliban and the other Jihadists is an actual US goal now. Two, Trump's raising the issue of Pakistan's role in allowing Jihadists on its soil, is a new approach. Three, the President's call on India to invest economically in Afghanistan is also a novelty.

But Phares argued that a first point needs to be clarified. "It seems the President listened an advice claiming that if we weaken the Taliban to a point, we can negotiate their incorporation in the Afghan Government. But when they are weakened or defeated, the Madrassa network will produce another wave" he argued. "What is the measurement of a political victory after a military victory, that is unclear and needs to be clarified"

As for the missing point, Phares argued that there need to be a partnership with the Afghan people. "That society has changed, we have new generations of youth, women, minorities and new political parties across the country. We need to partner with them, as they are the alternative to the forces we are fighting. We need to have a debate on that point."
