Phares to al Watan: "Muslim Brotherhood takeover in Egypt early warning to US Congress about post Assad Islamist takeover in Syria"
Interviewed by Ahmad Tahir for al Watan of Egypt, Dr Walid Phares said "the takeover by the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt, claiming they were revolutionaries, was an early warning to many members of the US Congress about a potential repeat of the scenario in Syria where the Islamists, who claim they are rebels against Assad, would seize power and establish a Jihadi emirate."

Phares to USA Today: "The Ikhwan wanted to seize Saudi, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan"
"Arab kings and sheiks are speaking out in support of secular civil society and against Islamists because "they know that eventually the Brotherhood will go after them" too, says Walid Phares, author of the book The Coming Revolution: Struggle for Freedom in the Middle East. "It would be a better deal to recognize civil society little by little than to fall all at once to the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists." The conflict between secularists and Islamists is also generating a new religious dialog about the role of religion in politics, something many in the West have said is needed since the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States, Phares said. Grand sheik Ahmed al-Tayeb of Cairo's al-Azhar University urged Brotherhood members to renounce violence and said his institution would resist political efforts to influence religious scholars, according to a translation by Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm. "Religious non-Islamist leaders of the Arab world want free of the sphere of the Muslim Brotherhood," Phares said. (Walid Phares to USA Today)

The US Report: "Mideast analyst Phares warned about pitfalls of Arab Spring, Ikhwan ‘talking points’
"The Obama Administration's advisors have been wrong in their assessment of the Muslim Brotherhood handling. The Ikhwan aren't naïve kids that you can transform into moderate by granting them power. Once they have the Government in their hands, they won't become social democrats. Instead they will use this power at will to implement their Islamist extremist strategies. The only path for the Brotherhood to return to the political process is by reforming as Gorbatchev has attempted to do with the Soviets. He failed, so good luck for the Ikhwan." (US Report)

Phares to RT: "Egypt Army attempting to deny a Waziristan or North Mali type enclave in Sinai"
In an interview with Russia Today TV, Dr Walid Phares said "Morsi was criticized for talks with Jihadists. He could ‘could have ordered Sinai operation 1 ½ years ago’." Phares added that "Despite reports that the operation would last for approximately two days, the Egyptian Army is well aware of the fact that “they would be fighting a long war against the terrorists in Sinai, and most likely also in mainland Egypt,” Middle East analyst and counter-terrorism expert Walid Phares told RT. "Currently, the army is “making sure that the Jihadi forces won’t have an enclave” in North Sinai, which could turn it into a breakaway extremist-controlled region, Phares said. According to information published by the Egyptian Army, “had the Morsi regime continued for a few more months…there would have been a declaration of an emirate of Northern Sinai…and that would be the equivalent of Waziristan in Pakistan, or Northern Mali,” the analyst explained. While it is unclear if the extremists in the region have links to the Muslim Brotherhood, both the army and secular parties have criticized ousted president Morsi for what he “could have ordered the same Egyptian Army to go and do the same operation 1 ½ years ago, but he did not.” He added: "Morsi’s government failed to do so, instead choosing to send a delegation to negotiate with Sinai extremists because Morsi’s right-wing ally, the Al-Nur Salafi party, had been “linked to these Jihadists” and “came from the same background,” according to Phares.
